The Rowan County Inmate Work Crew program, launched in mid-April, is already showing measurable results in its early stages. Since beginning operations on April 17, the crew has made significant strides in cleaning up local roadways.
Currently operating just one full day and one half day each week, the work crew has already logged more than 260 combined man-hours. In that short time, they have collected over 1,000 pounds of garbage and cleaned more than 20 miles of county roads.
County officials are pleased with the early progress and see the program as a promising solution for improving public spaces while giving inmates a chance to contribute positively to the community.
“This is a strong start, especially considering they’re only working one and a half days per week,” officials said in a statement. “We hope to expand this initiative to a full-time schedule in the future.”
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office believes the program offers dual benefits — helping beautify the community while promoting responsibility and skill-building among participating inmates.
