Undocumented Immigrant Arrested After Rowan County Chase

An undocumented immigrant, identified as Galindo Estrada, was arrested in Rowan County on Monday, July 21, after leading deputies on a brief but erratic chase near Highway 70 and Barber Junction Road in Cleveland.

Sheriff Travis Allen witnessed Estrada driving recklessly while holding an open beer can. When Allen attempted a traffic stop, Estrada fled and eventually abandoned the vehicle, running into nearby woods. Two K-9 units were called in and located Estrada hiding in a swamp.

Authorities say Estrada was initially deceptive about his identity and had no form of identification. He was later identified through fingerprinting during the booking process.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) interviewed Estrada on July 29 and issued an immigration detainer, allowing the detention center to hold him for up to 48 additional hours for possible federal custody and deportation.

Charges Filed:

  1. Open container
  2. Resisting a public officer
  3. Failure to maintain lane control

Estrada is being held on a $50,000 secured bond.
