ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Sheriff Travis Allen requested a state investigation in March 2025 after an internal review uncovered the improper handling of property from a stolen-goods case, a probe which later led to the arrest of one former deputy and the indictment of another.
Allen said the issue surfaced through a division supervisor and not through an outside complaint. He contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation on March 12, 2025, and formally asked the agency to take over the inquiry.
Based on early findings from the internal review, two detectives were terminated. The sheriff’s office said the incident appeared isolated and all items tied to the case were located and accounted for.
During a ten-month period between March 2025 and January 2026, the case was reviewed by the Randolph County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors later presented the matter to a grand jury.
On Jan. 12, 2026, the grand jury indicted Jeremy Dwayne Thomason and Christopher Michael Greer on charges of larceny by employee and obstruction of justice.
Greer turned himself in to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 13. He received a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Thomason has agreed to surrender but had not done so as of Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Allen said he requested the state investigation to maintain transparency and accountability within the agency. An unredacted copy of his original request to the SBI was released alongside the announcement.
