Guilford County Inmate Dies After Medical Emergency in Custody

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A Guilford County inmate died early Feb. 23 after being transported from the detention center to a local hospital, authorities said.
Sheriff Danny H. Rogers said Scott Alan Fanter was taken from the Guilford County Detention Center in High Point to High Point Regional Hospital after experiencing a medical condition while in custody.
According to a news release, Fanter had a pulse during transport. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 2 a.m.
Fanter was arrested Jan. 28, 2026, and charged with felony attempted first-degree murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, and misdemeanor assault by pointing a firearm. He was being held without bond pending his next court date.
Rogers said Fanter’s family has been notified.
