High-speed chase from Charlotte ends in Salisbury after driver surrenders

SALISBURY, N.C. — A high-speed pursuit that began in Mecklenburg County ended in Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon after the driver surrendered, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the incident started just before 11 a.m. when a white Mercedes SUV was clocked at about 103 mph in a 70 mph zone on Interstate 485. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to pull over and continued onto Interstate 85 northbound.
The pursuit continued into Rowan County, where troopers said speeds exceeded 130 mph.
During the chase, a state trooper was involved in a crash on I-85 and was injured. Officials did not release details on the extent of the injuries.
Authorities said the fleeing SUV struck several vehicles during the pursuit. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department helicopter assisted when ground units temporarily lost sight of the vehicle.
The chase ended in Salisbury when the SUV stopped in a Lowe’s parking lot on Faith Road. The driver surrendered without further incident.
The driver was identified as 31-year-old Hadari Williams of Charlotte. He was taken into custody. Authorities said charges were pending.
