Multiple Charged After Large Cockfighting Ring Discovered in Forsyth County


GERMANTON, N.C. — Forsyth County deputies uncovered a large cockfighting operation during an animal welfare check Wednesday, leading to multiple arrests, the seizure of drugs and weapons, and the recovery of more than 400 roosters.


The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division responded Jan. 14 to a home in the 7000 block of Baux Mountain Road. Deputies reported finding hundreds of cages filled with roosters.


Investigators obtained a search warrant. During the search, deputies seized about one kilogram of cocaine, multiple firearms, and cash.


The sheriff’s office said six people face charges so far.


Edward Thomas Marin, 29, of Winston-Salem, was charged with felony maintaining a dwelling, felony possession of cocaine, felony trafficking cocaine, possession of a weapon by a felon, felony cockfighting, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. Marin was jailed at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center under a $260,000 secured bond.


Joxin Trinidadvargas, 25, of Winston-Salem, was charged with felony cockfighting. She was held on a $1,000 secured bond.


Filogonio Garcia Gonzalez, 71, of Winston-Salem, was charged with felony cockfighting and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.


Mike Allen Lopeznoyola, 25, of Winston-Salem, was charged with felony cockfighting and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.


Jose Raul Cruzavila, 46, of Winston-Salem, was charged with felony cockfighting and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond.


A juvenile also faces a felony cockfighting charge and a resisting a public officer charge. The juvenile was placed at the Alexander Youth Detention Facility.


Animal services officers said more than 400 roosters were recovered from the property.


The sheriff’s office said the investigation continues and more information will follow.
