NCSHP Targets Passenger Vehicle Drivers in Operation SafeDRIVE Enforcement

Here is a rewrite aimed directly at passenger vehicle drivers, using clear, public-safety focused language:

NCSHP Participates in Operation SafeDRIVE

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is partnering with law enforcement agencies in neighboring states for Operation SafeDRIVE, a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration campaign focused on reducing serious crashes involving commercial motor vehicles.

High-visibility traffic enforcement will take place January 13–15. Troopers will monitor both commercial and passenger vehicles, with special attention on behaviors that put lives at risk, including speeding, aggressive driving, tailgating, distracted driving, impaired driving, and seat belt violations.

Operation SafeDRIVE places strong emphasis on passenger vehicle drivers. Many serious crashes involving large trucks and buses start with unsafe actions by drivers in smaller vehicles. Troopers will also check commercial drivers for compliance with safety regulations, licensing, and hours-of-service rules.

Passenger vehicle drivers are urged to use extra caution around large trucks and buses:

• Avoid blind spots. Large vehicles have wide no-zones on all sides.

• Pass safely. Only pass when you see the driver in the side mirror and complete the pass without lingering.

• Do not cut in too closely. A loaded truck traveling at highway speed needs the length of two football fields to stop.

• Do not tailgate. Following too closely removes your escape space and puts you at risk.

• Stay focused. Distraction and impatience near large vehicles often lead to fatal crashes.

The goal of SafeDRIVE is simple: reduce serious injuries and deaths involving commercial vehicles. Your driving choices matter. Slow down. Stay alert. Share the road responsibly.
