LANDIS, N.C. — A 48-year-old man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Tuesday night in Rowan County, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched around 9:58 p.m. on Nov. 18 to the railroad tracks near the 1400 block of Pinnacle Way Drive after receiving a report that a pedestrian had been hit by a passenger train. When deputies arrived, Landis Police officers and first responders were already on the scene and located the body of Luis Javier Marrero Muniz on the tracks behind the address.
Investigators determined that earlier in the evening, Landis Police had responded to Muniz’s residence for a reported domestic disturbance. According to officers, the caller reported that Muniz was intoxicated, had left before police arrived, and was last seen jumping over a guard rail near the tracks.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing as officials await findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Sheriff Travis Allen expressed condolences to the family of Muniz.
