WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A Winston-Salem police officer was injured Thursday night after an impaired driver crashed into three police SUVs while officers investigated an earlier wreck, authorities said.
The crash occurred at about 9:47 p.m. in the 5900 block of Silas Creek Parkway.
Police said Cpl. Jason Hollifield, Officer Tanner Jackson and Officer Andrew Conway were on scene with emergency lights activated when a vehicle failed to move over and struck three marked police SUVs.
One officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The officer was later released. The other officers were not injured.
The driver of the vehicle was also injured and treated at a hospital, police said.
Investigators identified the driver as 48-year-old Kenneth Devon White. Police charged White with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked due to a prior DWI, failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision, and having an alcoholic beverage in the passenger area of a vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation. Police urged drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along roadways.
