CONCORD, N.C. — The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Division has installed the county’s first self-service pet microchip scan station to help reunite lost pets with their owners.
The station sits outside Cabarrus County Animal Control at 244 Betsy Carpenter Place SW in Concord. Residents who find a stray pet scan the animal for a microchip before taking the pet to a shelter.
Officials said the scanner provides a quick method for the public to check whether a lost pet carries a registered microchip. When a chip appears, the scanner produces an audible beep.
Instructions for operating the scanner appear on signage above the device. Community members scan the QR code located in the paw print on the sign for steps on contacting the pet’s owner.
The sheriff’s office said the station helps reduce unnecessary shelter intake by giving residents a way to locate owners and return pets home.
Anyone unable to keep a found animal while attempting to locate the owner should contact Cabarrus County Emergency Dispatch at 704-920-3000.
Additional assistance appears through the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter at 704-920-3288 or Cabarrus County Animal Control at 704-920-3292.
