A lively evening in downtown Concord turned into turmoil on Saturday when gunfire broke out during the city's annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, resulting in injuries to four teenagers and leading officials to call off the event and evacuate attendees.
The shooting occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. near Corban Avenue along Union Street South, as per a statement from the City of Concord. Prompt responses from Concord Police officers, Concord Fire personnel, and Cabarrus County EMS provided medical assistance while the crowds were guided away from the scene. Drivers were advised to steer clear of adjacent streets to allow emergency crews to secure the area and manage traffic.
Four teenagers, aged 15, 17 (two individuals), and 18, were taken to the emergency department with gunshot wounds, as stated by a source from the hospital. Three of the teenagers are in critical condition, while one is listed as stable. The hospital has since lifted its mass-casualty status.
Following the incident, the hospital faced a separate disturbance related to the shooting episode. According to a hospital source, Atrium Health Cabarrus was briefly put on lockdown due to a confrontation in the Emergency Room involving family members of the victims. The lockdown was a precautionary measure and not due to an external threat.
The cancellation of the Tree Lighting Ceremony, a significant event that traditionally attracts large holiday crowds, was announced after the shooting, with attendees instructed to vacate the area.
Authorities are currently examining event recordings and interviewing witnesses. They are also calling on individuals who captured photos or videos during the chaos to provide them to aid in the investigation.
Anyone with relevant information is urged to reach out to the Concord Police Department at 704-920-5027. Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.
